Nico Gomez And His Afro Percussion Inc. ‎– Ritual

Straight out from the darkness by many bloggers, this obscure LP was recorded by Nico Gomez and released on Dutch label Omega, an album in the same spirit of Paris Soul by french Lido's Orchestra Ben & The Platano Group : the Afro Latin Funk style. Under the pseudonym of Nico Gomez hides Joseph Van Het Groenewoud, an Dutch-Belgian composer and a big band leader who was active between the fifties and the seventies, best known for composed several songs for the belgian Latin Funk band, the Chakakas (remember the sexy song Jungle fever in Paul Thomas Anderson' film Boogie Night). The sound approaches that could produce such artists from New York label Fania Records and the group Fania All Stars (Ray Barretto was a member), adding drumbreaks, psych' organ/guitar and powerful percussion all served with spanish lyrics. Titles include two covers from the king of Mambo, the cuban Pérez Prado, Caballo Negro & the funky Mambo Lupita, five of his own compositions as the dancefloor 'Salsa' killer Cuba Libre, Jobim' One Note Samba and reprise of Chakakas, Eso Es El Amor. All tracks arranged & conducted by Nico Gomez.

Original issue from the Toshiba' Drum Drum Drum Series, the most wanted (1st pressing in red LP) of Tenshi No Yūwaku (Temptations Of Angels) featuring Jimmy Takeuchi & His Exciters with the arranger Kunihiko Suzuki. Titles include the greatest hits of the Japanese GS movement out in 1968, among cover songs by rock bands as The Tigers (Flower Necklace), The Tempters (Please, God), The Golden Cups (Girl With Long Hair), The Folk Crusaders (Unbearably Sad) or The Wild Ones (Bara No Koibito), Pop singers as the Angel Love of Jun Mayuzumi (Kunihiko Suzuki' composition), Yukari Ito' Drops Of Love, the Secret Love of Tomoko Ogawa. Ultra Rare Jazz Rock Psych' LP from DYNAGROOVE series released for RCA-Victor label, the  battle of drum is the meeting between Takeshi Inomata and three others japanese drummers :  Masao Suzuki (not to be confused with saxophonist Masao Suzuki), Seiji Tanaka & Chito Kawachi. They are involved in the Inomata' Jazz Rock band, The Sound Limited, featuring Kimio Mizutani and Makoto 'Jun' Suzuki plus horns section (probably with saxophonist Jake H. Concepcion), all conducted by arranger Norio Maeda. Titles include as well as covers from Rock'N'Roll of Deep Purple (Black Night), Chase (Get It On), The Rolling Stones (Tumbling Dice), from Soul as Theme From Shaft by Stax Soul hero Isaac Hayes or also the Latin Rock Black Magic Woman by Santana (first recorded by Peter Green). Considered as his best album with the sublime GarraPrevisão Do Tempo is more a Jazz Funk album as Herbie Hancock & his The Headhunters know how to do, than his two previous albums. The Fender Rhodes and synthesizer are predominant all along  "Previsão Do Tempo" which representative of the versatile style of Valle, for each album, a new sound). As always his brother Paolo Sergio is involved in the songwriting but also Joao Donato and Eumir Deodato who collaborated on Não Tem Nada Não. Marcos is surrounded by the future famous brazilian Jazz Funk band, Azymuth featuring José Roberto Bertrami, Alex Malheiros and Ivan Conti  as well as O Terço, for the second time after the "Vento Sul" album. Titles include the Jazz Funk songs "Nem Paletó, Nem Gravata" & "Mentira" (favourite Jazz Dance Club) and the Bossa Nova tunes "Flamengo Até Morrer" feat. The Funky Organ-ization Of Henry Cain

The Funky Organ-ization of Henry Cain, as the title suggests, is a funky set of eleven Soul Jazz instrumentals recorded in 1967. A cover album performed by the obscure organist Henry Cain, from Pop, Jazz, Soul and Rhythm & Blues. Most of the tracks are arranged by Oliver Nelson and recorded with the unmistakable groovy sound of the Hammond B3. The side A begins with The Way I Feel of John Patton and includes the unforgetable classics Respect & Sunnyrespectively written by Otis Redding and Bobby Hebb, but also two reprises released by Cannonball Adderlay in live album Why Am I Treated So Bad! (1967) : Why? (Am I Treated So Bad (Pops Stapples) and I'm On My Way (Nat Adderlay Jr.). The side B contains Oliver Nelson' Critic's Choice and Horror Scope, the unique track composed by Cain for this Album. Arranged by H. B. Barnum & Oliver Nelson.

The brilliant Terumasa Hino with the Masabumi Kikuchi Quintet in the 'New Stream In Jazz' as part of the Takt Jazz Series, recorded in 1968 and released for Nippon Columbia. It's the second collaboration of Terumasa Hino with pianist Masabumi Kikuchi (the first on Feeling Good' LP released in 1968) and the second pianist who accompanied the group after Yuji Ohno on Alone, Alone And Alone (1967). This quintet was based on the model of the Second Great Quintet by Miles Davis and formed around Takeru Muraoka, Kunimitsu Inaba and Motohiko Hino who were active between 1967-1970. Later, the group was joined by Hiromasa Suzuki who has replaced Kikuchi on Hi-Nology (1969), Swing Journal Jazz Workshop 1 - Terumasa Hino Concert (1969), Hakuchu No Shugeki Original Soundtrack (1970) & Into The Heaven (1970). Hidehiko Matsumoto - The First By Sleepy

Titles include various style between Cool Jazz (My Funny Valentine, Satin Doll), Bossa Nova (Tuesday Samba), Hard Bop and Traditional (Take Five, St. Thomas). Tuesday Samba is a variation of Monday Samba on the Kawaguchi album, both composed by Hidehiko Matsumoto.

Tadayuki Harada And His Group - Playboy's Theme

Sweet mood of debut album as a leader for Takt Jazz Series New Stream In Jazz collection from Nippon Columbia. Born into a family of jazz musicians (his father and his brother were jazz drummer), saxophonist Harada is one of most Japanese Jazz Greats. Between 1955-1957, Harada was involved in Nobuo Hara' Sharps & Flats and later joined The West Liners with Takeshi Inomata (1957-1966). In 1964, he played in Toshiko Akiyoshi' Japan Jazz All Stars  among a set which features notable musicians as Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb,  Hiroshi Suzuki & Terumasa Hino, on future classic of the pianist : Toshiko & Modern Jazz. Then moved to US in 1966, where he become a studio musician in Los Angeles. Harada was credited on several artists productions such as the prestigious Frank Sinatra, Marlene Dietrich, Helen Merrill, Salina Jones or Sammy Davis Jr. After this american experience, Harada formed his own band The Hearts in 1971, and played in groups like Norio Maeda' Wind Breakers but also Takeshi Inomata & The Third (1979).

Harada is surrounded by a large group of musicians featuring the entire formation of Inomata' West Liners among Masaru Imada, Sadanori Nakamure, Tetsuo Fushimi, Tatsuro Takimoto, Ichiro Mimori & Shigeo Suzuki, all supported by a string ensemble conducted by great arranger Norio Maeda. Titles include classics of Bossa Nova from Jorge Ben & Edu Lobo, covers pop songs from Bobby Hebb, Burt Bacharach or the Monkeys, and some Jazz standards as the Zawinul' Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.

This compilation gathers on 3xLP, several recordings of the legendary Afro-Jazz formation created by multi-instrumentalist James 'Plunky' Branch. Their most active and prolific years were spent on the New York scene in the seventies. Most of their productions were releseased for Strata East & Black Fire labels, under various names, the best-known being Oneness Of Juju. Their musical style explores as well as Spiritual Jazz (No Name # III / Love Is... / My Nigger & Me), experimental (Nairobi/Chants), Afrobeat (Follow Me), Funk/Soul (Be About The Future, Got To Be Right On It ) and even Disco (Plastic, Every Way But Loose ). Titles include selected tracks in conjunction with James Branch, some best recordings, the most famous is African Rhythms, releseased as Juju, Oneness Of Juju, Plunky & Oneness Of Juju but also solo band member and some project featuring Juju' leader and others as Lon Moshe or the ghanaian drummer & percussionist  Okyerema Asante. Baden Powell - Canto On Guitar

Among best album of Baden Powell recorded by H. G. Brunner-Schwer at MPS Studio in Germany at the end of 1970. Canto On Guitar is a huge classic and often considered as his genious masterpiece. Baden explores the African culture and especially Arabic sounds (Cegos do Nordeste) with typical brazilian percussions (berimbau) and  backing rhythms. Titles include, his trademark, the Afro-Brazilian style as evidenced Três Temas da Fé Afro-Brasileira suite, Samba em Prelúdio (written by the poet Vinícius de Morães), the Samba Jazz tune Qua Quara Qua Qua (co-written with the famous Samba composer P.C. Pinheiro) and Tributo A Um Amigo which demonstrating his great guitar playing skills.

The Hungarian 'Gypsy' guitarist associated with Soul Legend Bobby Womack to create this High 'Groove' Contrast. A Soulful project inspired by some Womack' works with four songs whose If You Don't Want My Love extracted from Communication album released the same year and  Across 110th Street Original Score (1972). In High Contrast features the Breezin' tune composed especially for him (later played by Benson in 1976) and three Szabo' originals (Amazon, Fingers & Azure Blue). To accompany them, some special guest as the Soul guitarist & bassist, Phil Upchurch on Breezin' & I Remember When and producer Tommy LiPuma (incognito) on this album under the pseudonym of The Shadow (tambourine & gourd). A new direction is taken with this third recording influenced by the James Brown' sound which he decides to introduce in his music. To obtain the desired 'groove', he recruits Pee Wee Ellis from The JB's who arrange three of five tracks and composed with him the openning track, Dance. Recorded with the same rhythm section as Beyond The Blue Horizon (except Harold Mabern who replaces Clarence Palmer), the formation consists of Gary King, percussionist Mobutu, Frank Foster, his friend & sideman Earl Klugh, all surrounded by a horn section including John Faddis. Produced by Creed Taylor, arranged and conducted by Pee Wee Ellis. All tracks composed by George Benson except When Love Has Grown by Donny Hattaway.

Nujabes - Jun Seba Is Nujabes by Be Hard Bop

Nujabes (1974-2010), one of Jazzy Hip-Hop representatives, was a japanese beatmaker, producer & owner of independant record label Hyde Out Recordings. Best known for his collaboration to the Samurai Champloo soundscape in 2004 (alongside Fat Jon, FORCE OF NATURE & TSUTCHIE), he frequently worked for various artists from all over the world, as Apani B, Funky DL, CL Smooth, Substantial, Cise Starr from CYNE, Terry Callier or Pase Rock from Five Deez. This compilation brings together some of his finest productions released between 1998-2011, demonstrating his various musical abilities including Jazz & Soul samples, Downtempo, Cool & Future Jazz.

Clarence Wheeler is a saxophonist from Chicago in group, The Enforcers, a jazz quartet formed with Sonny Burke, George Hughes and Sonny Covington who released two others album for Atlantic records, The Love I've Been Looking For (1971) & The New Chicago Blues (1973). One rare groove gem of essential Soul Jazz recordings and most famous Wheeler' LP with Funk/Soul flavor and Pop Jazz. Titles including the Beatles cover song Hey Jude, Sham Time by Eddie Harris, Theme From electric Surfboard by Brother Jack McDuff, the classic Right On and two originals songs composed by Clarence Wheeler and Sonny Burke. On Right On, the chorus is formed by Cissy Houston, Jackie Verdell and Judy Clay.

His most interesting LP, unfairly criticized which includes psychedelic rock, experimental pop and orchestral music, played in collaboration of the progressive brazilian rock band O Terço featuring Vinícius Cantuária, Sérgio Hinds & César de Mercês. He started to compose "Vento Sul" with his brother Paulo Sérgio in a hippie atmosphere in Buzios, a city of Brazilian surf and conterculture. The Spirit of George MartinThe Beatles hover on this major album of brazilian pop music, a kind of brazilian "Sergent Pepper", including the protest song Revolução Orgãnica and the heavy metal song Mi Hermoza. Orchestra is arranged & conducted by Hugo Bellar (on Deixa Mundo E O Sol Entrar) and Ian Guest (on Bodas De Sangue). Jacques Loussier - Tu Seras Terriblement Gentille

Jacques Loussier is a french pianist & composer internationaly renowned for his 'Play Bach' series, the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, consisting in five discs performed between 1959-1967 with bassist Pierre Michelot and drummer Christian Garros. Mister Loussier has composed soundtracks for over 67 films, made for television films and television series whose Dark Of The Sun (1968) and this obscure 'cult' soundtrack recorded for the Dirk Sanders movie 'Tu Seras Terriblement Gentille' (You Only Love Once in english broadcasted in 1967). It combines Jazz, Pop (check above the Jerk "Top Cover Girl" track), Bossa Nova, Soul Jazz and various eclectic moods, including electronic sounds occurred by organ, synthesizer and the ringtones bells, all served by Big Band and the magnificent arrangements of Loussier.

Curious compilation of some Felton' Soul Jazz Funk songs released between 1970-1974. The compilation is based on only three of his productions from his own label Hilton Concept : A Man For All Reasons '74 (Bee Bop Boogie & Tell Her Love Has The Need), Family And Friends '72 (Spreading Fever), and Dream Come True (1971) performed by The Three Of Us (Dream Come True & Your Analysis). The Three Of Us is a Jazz trio formed by Hilton featuring percussionist Jonathan Settel & guitarist David Mendenhall. On the others tracks, the rest of the group  include Orville Saunders, Joe Hall from The Blackbyrds, Andrew White, Howard Chichester, Charles Fuller and Gary Hart. Sammy is the pseudonym of Masami Chino,  prolific japanese female rock singer from Soul to Psychedelic rock  who was active in the seventies. She sings it well known Jazz, Pop, Rock, Soul, Rhythm & Blues from british and american covers song and jazz standards (her voice tone can be situated between Janis Joplin and Grace Slick). Introduced in the japanese jazz rock scene, she started to work with the legendary Freedom Unity (a jazz quartet formed by Hiromasa Suzuki and Akira Ishikawa) and collaborated with Jiro Inagaki on several albums as Wandering Birds (1971). Later, she also worked with Akira Ishikawa' Count Buffalo band for Soul & Soul (1972). It's the second collaboration with The Freedom Unity, after Dynamic Rock (1971), the group is surrounded by a string section plus additional guitarist (probably Kimio Mizutani)  and arranged by Hiromasa Suzuki.
