Volume 7 of the compilation series dedicated to the essential sound of the Brazil '70, including Latin Jazz, Samba Funk/Soul and MPB. Marcos Valle ‎- Mustang Côr De Sangue

The album that opens the Valle's psychedelic pop era including six masterpieces released from 1970 to 1974, whose the iconic "Bed Album" (the Marcos Valle self-titled album in 1970), "Garra" in 1971 and "O Fabuloso Fittipaldi Original Soundtrack" introducing the Brazilian Jazz Funk band "Azymüth" in 1973. Killer samba/jazz funk gem "Edson Frederico E A Transa" including "Bobeira" selected by DJ Cliffy for the "Black Rio Compilation Vol. 2", released in 2009. Edson Frederico was a pianist and arranger who started as musical director of various brazilian TV programs and soundtracks. During his prolific career, he was sideman as pianist for the bossa nova legends Toquinho, Tom Jobim, Vinicius De Moraes or Elis Regina. In the 70s, he was an arranger very popular among MPB artists, collaborating with the Antônio Carlos and Jocáfi duo, Djavan, Jorge Ben, Sonia Santos, that earned him, thereafter, to be engaged by the biggest stars such as Roberto Carlos, Spanky Wilson or Sarah Vaughan ("Exclusivamente Brasil", 1980). Edson (keys) is supported by experienced musicians featuring percussionists Helcio Milito, Chico Batera & Luna Messina, Bebeto Castilho (b), singer Orlandivo (vo, perc), Raymundo Bittencourt (vo) from Aquarius and Wilson Das Neves (ds), in groups The Ipanemas and Os Gatos, formed by Eumir Deodato. Brazilian gem recorded in France at studio Barclay in 1972, including killer song "Balanca Pema" sampled by Madlib for "Flight To Brazil" in 2010. Originally released as "Brésil 72", this album was also known as "Bossa Explosiva" and now reissued by Mr Bongo simply titled "Ronald Mesquita". Ronald Mesquita was best-known as the second drummer in Luis Carlos Vinhas's trio Bossa Três ("Os Reis Do Rítmo", "Em Forma", 1966), member of Bossa Rio produced by Sergio Mendes, and also sideman for Bola Sete, Tenório Jr. or Osmar Milito. "Brésil 72" echoes to famous Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 who contributed to popularize Bossa Nova in US or "Aquarius", another brazilian group perfectly cut for the jazz dancefloors. Ronald Mesquita & his Central Do Brazil take over songs from the masters of Bossa Nova featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim (Águas De Marco), Toquinho & Vinicius De Moraes (Tarde Em Itapôa), Edu Lobo (Zanzibar) or from the brazilian new wave of Samba among Gilberto Gil (Fechado Prá Balanço) or Jorge Ben (Balança Pema). Fabulous self-titled album from the brazilian princess Célia Regina Cruz, tropicalism masterpiece with pop arrangements, funk/soul accents & psychedelia, including her best known song, own version of "Na Boca Do Sol" composed by Arthur Verocai. Conducted & arranged by maestro Arthur Verocai, one legendary arranger of the Tropicalia movement, "Célia '72" includes also an all-star composers collective featuring Marcos Valle, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius De Moraes, Erasmo Carlos & Roberto Carlos. Finally reissued by Mr Bongo in 2018, "Célia '72" is the second of four self-titled albums serie released for the Continental label between 1971 and 1977, the first two with Verocai.

Originally reissued by japanese label Production Dessinée, "Preço de Cada Um" is one of the most unknown and most wanted original album from the late seventies, recorded in the Brazilian Jazz Samba style. Cravo & Canela, successor of the Sergio Mendes '66, plays Samba fusion with MPB elements & Jazz Funk arrangements, with the soulful sound of electric piano in the same line as Deodato or Antonio Adolfo. The band is lead by Aramis Barros and formed around guitarist Lucio Nascimento, pianist Reinaldo Arias & his wife Fabiola. Produced, recorded and arranged by Oswaldo Cadaxo, "Preço de Cada Um" includes a skilled line-up with experienced studio musicians featuring Teo Lima (sideman for Antonio Adolfo, Sergio Mendes, Gilberto Gil or Oscar Castro-Neves) and guest star musician, the world famous brazilian accordion player, Sivuca, who worked for Airto Moreira, Miriam Makeba and Paul Simon among others.

"Viola Enluarada" is the second album from the Marcos Valle's pop era, tinged by a melancholic and sweet voice including baroque pop style, bossa nova materials and jazz expressions. Arranged by the brazilian maestro Dori Caymmi, Antônio Adolfo, Oscar Castro-Neves and Eumir Deodato (who played also piano), "Viola Enluarada" features some guests musicians such as Bossa Nova guitarist Roberto Menescal, and singers who lend their voice on several songs, the young Milton Nascimento on "Viola Enluarada" & "Requiem", the Jovem Guarda quartet "Golden Boys" on "Terra De Ninguém", and Valle's wife Anamaria on the catchy bossa song "Próton Elétron Neutron". Som Três is a bossa jazz trio, active from 1966 to 1971, who have offered their services as backing band for Wilson Simonal including "Vou Deixar Cair" (1966) and the "Show Em Simonal" (1967) albums. The group is lead by the renowned brazilian pianist, arranger & producer, César "Camargo" Mariano, who worked for Elis Regina, Chico Buarque, Maria Bethânia, Jorge Ben and international artists such as French Pop songstress, France Gall. César "Camargo" Mariano was also a eminent member of  the Sambalaça Trio (alongside Airto Moreira), one of the most influential jazz samba formation in Brazil. The two others members who formed the trio are bassist Sebastião "Sabá" Oliveira Da Paz on bass &and drummer Antônio "Toninho" Pinheiro, both came from another brazilian jazz samba formation, the Jongo Trio. "Som 3" is a crossover jazz album with latin boogaloo, pop and funk expressions including also the Soul Jazz style on "Blood-Mary" & "There's Gonna Be A "Showdown". Titles include classics soul from the Motown (For Once In My Life, California Soul...), the brazilian standards (Sé Vocé Pensa, Que Pena) and the killer funk "Homenagem A Mongo" composed by Camargo.

Tania Maria - Brazil With My Soul

"Brazil With My Soul" is the third album by Brazilian songstress and pianist Tania Maria settled in France since 1974. As her two pervious albums, "Via Brazil Vol. 1 & 2", it was recorded in France, at studio Hoche, Paris. "Brazil With My Soul" is blend of jazz, bossa with up-tempo samba including scat songs in the pure Ella Fitzgerald's style and piano jazz improvisations. Tania is surrounded by some of the best European Jazz musicians among others great bassist J.F. Jenny-Clark (sideman for Gato Barbieri, Michel Portal & Masahiko Togashi) and italian drummer Aldo Romano. Trio Mocotó was formed in 1968, in São Paulo, by three percussionists : Fritz Escovão, Joãozinho Parahyba & Nereu Gargalo. Their music is the result of a Brazilian sounds fusion (samba & bossa) with the American pop, often reduced to the name of "samba rock". But Trio Mocotó is more a synthesis between various musical styles from funk to rock, passing by the jazz, than some samba rock. The trio are mainly known as the Jorge Ben’s backing band, during the zenith of his career (1969-1971), when they took part in his great recordings as the "Força Bruta" & "Negro E Lindo" albums. Titles include the opening track "Desapareça" (a powerful afro-brasileira-samba-funk song), a funny variation of the pop cover "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" (Gotas De Chuva Na Minha Cuíca), and the Latin Jazz songs "Palomares" & "Eu Tou Por For Da Jogada". 

Aquarius Y Luiz Antonio - Brasil

Japanese reissue of rare album from the brazilian group Aquarius featuring the brazilian singers Luiz Antonio & Erica Norimar. Originally recorded in Barcelona, the album includes the classics Bossa Nova songs from Antonio Carlos Jobim, Baden Powell, Edu Lobo, Milton Nascimento...Aquarius is led by the arranger, producer & drummer, Raymundo Bittencourt, consisting also in Octavio Bonfá Burnier (nephew of Luiz Bonfá), one of the best contemporary brazilian guitarist, member of the group "Burnier & Cartier". Erica Norimar sung for spanish jazz pianist Jordi Sabatés on the Ocells Del Més Enllà album. Produced by Raymundo Bittencourt & Octavio Bonfá Burnier.

 

Gal E Caetano Velloso ‎- Domingo

"Domingo" is the result of the meeting between Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa, two major faces of the Brazilian music out from the seventies. Both influenced by João Gilberto, they produced here their debut album, the only one played in the pure Bossa Nova style including softness voices and a delicacy guitar playing, supported by guitarist Dori Caymmi in addition. "Domingo" is part of Gal Costa/Caetano Veloso's respective discographies and was recorded just before the explosion of Tropicália movement, which whom Gal & Caetano will become two iconic figures. Titles include solo and duet songs based on original compositions by Caetano, Edu Lobo (Candeias), Sidney Miller (Maria Joana), Gilberto Gil & Torquato Neto (Minha Senhora, Zabelê). All tracks arranged by  Francis Hime and Roberto Menescal.

Brasilia Modern Six - Estréia

Obscure Brazilian Soft Rock group from the late 60's, formed by a chorus of six members who sings as well in english as in portugese, and a backing band featuring organist reminding the Walter Wanderley's style. In the same way as the Mario Castro Neves & Samba S. A.'s albums, titles include typical brazilian jazz style with bossa & samba songs (Roda De Samba, Homem Zero, Balanço De Criança),  but also international pop standards (a lounge version of the Doors' classic "Light My Fire"), and latin cover songs (The theme song of Chile movie "Morir un Poco", "Viento Dile A la Lluvia" from Argentina rock group Los Gatos).
