Between the Banda Black Rio & Azymuth, "Copa 7" is a brazilian samba funk collective who grew up during the Black Rio movement era. Indeed "Do Copa 7 Vol. 2", their second album, incoporates all the elements of the typical sounds from the Brazil '70, including samba, performed  in the pure "brass band" spirit. Titles include samba songs based on funk ("O Circo", "Som Do Copa No2"), boogie (Tõ Maluco), jazz funk (Pintar O 7), some scat vocals, lush synths, mighty baile grooves (Levanta Poeira), and of course the club killers "Maria Joana", "Agora E Minha Vez".

The second master stroke by Brazilian Jazz Funk band No. 1 recorded during the golden era of the brazilian funk called "Black Rio", was realeased the same year and on same label as the other classic "Maria Fumaça" by Banda Black Rio. "Agua Nao Come Mosca" was a big success that launched their international career and brought them to join Milestone records for all the following decade. Performed by the magic trio including Alex Malheiros (eb, eg, vo), José Roberto Bertrami (keys, vo) and Ivan “Mamao” Conti (ds, perc, vo), it features also percussionists Ariovaldo Contesini Ganzá (triangle, tamborim), Neném Da Cuica (cuica) and saxophonist Paulo Moura from Bossa Rio. Titles include soulful moods ("Águia Não Come Mosca"), samba-boogie-funk (A Presa), lush soundscapes (Tamborim, Cuíca, Ganzá, Berimbau), floating synths' sounds ("Vôo Sobre O Horizonte", "Tarde"), and the inimitable drum grooves with insane rhythms from Mamao (the crazy batucada "Aguia Negra X Dragao Negro"). Marcos Valle - Vontade De Rever Você

Recorded at the end of the disco era and during the smooth jazz climax, "Vontade De Rever Você" is the first Marcos Valle's album released after his Californian stay to escape to the Brazilian censorship between 1975-1980. Marcos brought back with him the north american "sound" including boogie-funk and disco music to take a new artistic direction, recruiting R&B songwriter Leon Ware, one Marvin Gaye's collaborator. Other talented musicians surround him, such as the founder members of american jazz-funk collective "Chicago" (Peter Cetera, Walter Parazaider, James Pankow), and a Brazilian stellars crew with saxophonist Oberdan & bassist Jamil Joanes from Banda Black Rio, jazz percussionist Airto Moreira, Robson Jorge on guitar, José Roberto Bertrami from Azymuth on keyboards and accordionist Sivuca. Titles include "Paraiba Nao E Chicago" (his own variation on the Leon Ware's "Baby Don't Stop Me"), "Garimpando", the disco-funk gem cut for the dancefloor "Velhos Surfistas Querendo Voar", the samba interlude "Campina Grande", the sublime latin pop ballad "Sei La" and an up-tempo song "Pecados De Amor", originally composed for Cristina Camargo and previously released as "Mortal Tem Hora" in 1980.

Recorded by the iconic brazilian Soul Legend, "Disco Club" was cut for dancefloor spotlighting the disco-boogie sound as the title suggests, including his biggest hits "Sossego" and "Acenda O Farol". Tim Maia is surrounded by experienced musicians, including the core members of the Banda Black Rio featuring bassist Jamil Joanes and drummer Paulinha 'Black' Braga plus Hyldon De Souza on guitar, Robson Jorge on clavinet and Lincoln Olivetti as arranger on keyboards. The first side is devoted to dancefloors opening on the disco glitz "A Fim De Voltar" and "Acenda O Farol", following by the mighty boogie-funk "Sossego", instrumental "Vitória Régia Estou Contigo E Não Abro" and the fusion "All I Want". The godfather of Brazilian Soul, Tim Maia, was one of the most popular brazilian artist of his time, pioneer of the rhythm 'n' blues introduction in Barzilian music. After his controversial spiritual era of the Rational culture, when he recorded the masterpieces "Racional Vol. 1 & 2", Tim Maia gets involved into the explosion of the "Black Rio" movement along with brazilian artists like Toni Tornado or Banda Black Rio, who popularized the James Brown's funky sound in Brazil. In 1977, he signed this first and only studio album for Som Libre in the same line, before to released his most popular album nowadays, "Disco Club", including his two biggest hits "Sossego" and "Acenda O Farol" feat. Hyldon & Banda Black Rio. Also nicknamed "Verão Carioca", "Tim Maia Vol. 6" includes killer tunes from the anthem "É Necessário" to the boogie gems "Verão Carioca" or "Ride Twist And Roll", the funky "Feito Para Dançar", passing by "Venha Dormir Em Casa" which show us that he's the real Brazilian Soul man number one.

Compiled by DJ Cliffy and released under the British Afro music Label "STRUT", Black Rio Vol. 2 brings together some of the best Brazilian Soul & Funk songs recorded from the late sixties to the early eighties. Trio Mocotó - Trio Mocotó

Trio Mocotó was formed in 1968, in São Paulo, by three percussionists : Fritz Escovão, Joãozinho Parahyba & Nereu Gargalo. Their music is the result of a Brazilian sounds fusion (samba & bossa) with the American pop, often reduced to the name of "samba rock". But Trio Mocotó is more a synthesis between various musical styles from funk to rock, passing by the jazz, than some samba rock. The trio are mainly known as the Jorge Ben’s backing band, during the zenith of his career (1969-1971), when they took part in his great recordings as the "Força Bruta" & "Negro E Lindo" albums. Titles include the opening track "Desapareça" (a powerful afro-brasileira-samba-funk song), a funny variation of the pop cover "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" (Gotas De Chuva Na Minha Cuíca), and the Latin Jazz songs "Palomares" & "Eu Tou Por For Da Jogada". 

Miguel De Deus - Black Soul Brothers

Portugese reissue of the first solo album of brazilian guitarist Miguel De Deus, originally released in 1977 on Underground, subsidiary of Copacabana label. Miguel De Deus was the founding member of the latin rock group "Os Brazões" which accompagnied Gal Costa on stage & Tom Zé on the Grande Liquidação album in 1968. With "Os Mutantes", the band was emblematic of brazilian psychedelic rock scene in the late sixties. In the mid seventies, Miguel De Deus oriented his music to the Funk style, becoming a initiator of the Afro-Funk movement later called "Black Rio", strongly inspired by James Brown & the Black Power spirit. Recorded in São Paulo, at the Reunido Studio, "Black Soul Brothers" includes the title-track reissued by Mr. Bongo in 2014, "Cinco Anos", "Mister Funk" and "Flata Louca" from "Black Soul Brothers" EP released on Copacabana records.

Banda Black Rio - Maria Fumaça

"Maria Fumaça" is probably one of the best Brazilian Jazz Funk album ever recorded, recommended by Gilles Peterson. The name of the band came from by the Black Rio funk movement of the late seventies. "Banda Black Rio" was formed in 1976 by saxophonist Oberdan Magalhães & trumpeter José Carlos Barroso ("Barrosinho"), both former members of the Abolição group who accompanied the pianist Dom Salvador from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. It features Jamil Joanes (eb), Claudio Stevenson (eg), Cristovao Bastos (key, arr), Lucio Silva (tb) and Luis Carlos Santos (ds), supported by The Percussionists Of Rio De Janeiro featuring Luna, Nenê, Wilson Canegal & Geraldo Bongô. Often compared to Kool & The Gang and Earth Wind & Fire, the band rather plays a sound close to The Headhunters style, the backing band of Herbie Hancock during the seventies, and includes some Brazilian music elements. In 1978, the band was recruited as backing band for Time Maia on "Tim Maia Disco Club" and recorded a live album with Caetano Veloso entitled "Bicho Bale Show". Titles includes the Samba Funk "Marai Fumaça", the killer song Mr. Funky Samba and the Brazilian classics "Casa Forte" of Edu Lobo and "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro" of Ary Barroso.

Amazing Samba Funk/Soul album by Raul De Souza alias Raulzinho, under the name Impacto 8 group featuring brazilian singer Betinho, drummer Robertinho Silva & saxophonist Oberdan from famous Som Imaginário & Banda Black Rio bands. Raulzinho is a jazz trombonist coming from Rio De Janeiro, one of the greatest player of his generation who started as professional alongside the legendary guitarist Baden Powell and evolved in Sérgio Mendes & Bossa Rio. Since the seventies, he is a session musician in demand playing for american jazz fusion group "Caldera" and others international artists such as A. C. Jobim, Airto Moreira, Hermeto Pascoal, Sonny Rollins, Cal Tjader, Jimmy Smith and Sarah Vaughan. In 1975, with "Colors" (produced by Airto Moreira), he embraces an international career, signing on Milestone & Capitol Records and released two albums produced by George Duke, "Sweet Lucy" and "Don't Ask My Neighbors" (1977-1978). Titles include the club killer "Two Beat Manchild (Mundo Louco)", western pop hits "Spinning Wheel", "You've Made Me So Very Happy", the James Brown funk "I've Got The Feelin'", the jazz standards "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" and "Cantalope Island".
