Black Star is a Hip-Hop band formed by Mos Def & Talib Kweli associated with producer DJ Hi Tek & DJ Evil Dee on turntables. Black Star is part of the Native Tongues Posse, a collective that contains among others A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, the Jungle Brothers, Da Bush Babees and Common. Black Star come from the underground movement of the late 1990s on independent record label, Rawkus Records in New York City. Mos Def & Talib Kweli appeared together in the movie Dave Chappelle's Block Party filmed by Michel Gondry. The term of Black Star is a reference to Pan-Africanist Marcus Garvey movement. Titles include featurings with jazz keyboardist Weldon Irvine on Astronomy (8th Light), Vinia Mojica on K. O. S. (Determination), Apani B Fly on Hater Players, the magnificient Common on Respiration and Jane Doe, Punch&Words on Twice Inna Lifetime. All tracks produced by DJ Hi Tek, Mr.WaltJ.Rawls, Shawn J.
