"Space Kid" is a concept album which prefigures the future sound of You & The Explosion Band, formed for the original soundtrack of "Lupin The 3rd". Indeed, some sounds seem to us familiar, various soundscapes have been used in the serie and in particular the moog synthesizer effects heard in the "Cagliostro No Shiro" movie (1979). The core of You & Explosion Band is based on the rhythm section featuring Akira Okazawa, Tsunehide Matsuki, Yasushi Ichihara, Pepe Anai & Larry Sunaga, supported by horn section feat. Jake H. Conception & the Suzuki Group (strings). Tiltes include the disco funk song "Space Kid", a variation on the "Mayflower" recording taken from "Electro Keyboard Orchestra", where accoustic piano replaces moog synthesizer, two featurings with brazilian songtress Sonia Rosa (Never More, Dancing Raccoon) and the latin funk "Solar Samba". All tracks composed, arranged & recorded by Yuji Ohno.

Pasteur Lappé & The Sekele Movement - We, The People

Debut album of Pasteur Lappé, a Cameroonian singer from Douala who recorded from 1979 to 1981, some amazing funky nuggets such as "Na Real Sekele Fo' Ya" or "Sekelimania (Nku Bilam)". Pasteur Lappé is best-known to have popularized the "Sekele", a typical afro-groove embracing furious dances and the disco style, whole played in the cameroonian way. Settled in Paris from the seventies, he recruited guitarist Jacob Desvarieux, future founder member of Zouk band, Kassav, as arranger, and the collective "The Zulu Gang" formed by bassist Christophe Zadire, as backing band to produce his albums. The album opens with "More Sekele Movement" including deep bass groove & syncopated beat, followed by the catchy afro-folk-pop song "Dora". Titles include also two ballads  ("Watcha Get Ma Day Dreams", "As Far I Can Remember") and the single "The Sekele Movement" which was selected by Analog Africa label for the "Pop Makossa" compilation released in 2017.

M'Bamina - Expérimental

M'Bamina was formed in 1972 by eight african musicians of Bantu ethnic group, coming from Congo, Benin & Cameroon, and settled in Pavia, Italty. Discovered in an italian night club by Ivo Lunardi, they toured on the italian riviera before to spot by french impresario Christian Carbaza. After they moved to France, where they became friends of cameroonian legend Manu Dibango, they recorded in 1975 their first album "African Roll". On their success way, they performed across Europe in 1976, then in Cameroon at Stade Yaounde alongside French Pop star, Claude François, Manu Dibango, and finally played the first part of  the James Brown's concert at Pavillon de Paris in 1977. In the early eighties, they signed on the short-lived Paco Rabanne's label recording two albums before they disbanded. The group is a killer funk machine distilling pure dancing groove, connected to their African Roots with traditional Bantu lyrics, including Boogie Funk with a strong disco baseline (Atide O Sika, Tchiayala), Afro-Cuban rhythms & Folk Soul (Mambu, Zizi Ku Mbele). Produced by Philippe Brejean & arranged by Samba N'Gó.

Twenty amazing funky songs from the Nigerian pop & club music recorded between late 1970s and early 1980s, compiled by british label Soundway Records. The songs are the reflect of a joyful period, all were recorded during the short democratic interlude in Nigeria from 1979 to 1983, before the military dictatorship back. A new generation of artists featuring Steve Monite, Livy Ekemezie or Willy Roy have been emerge on the Lagos musical scene. Moving away the Afrobeat and nigerian highlife era, they were supported by influential producers like Odion Iruoje, and perfectly suited for dancefloor with the casualness brings by the disco style (Donna Summer or Michael Jackson), but adding their Afro touch. War Featuring Eric Burdon - Love Is All Around

"Love Is all Around" isn't the return of Eric Burdon in WAR band, but a collection of epic b-sides & unrealeased songs recorded from 1969 to 1970, and gathered in a compilation released during a WAR break in 1976, between the "Why Can't We Be Friends" & "Galaxy" albums. Most of the songs were recorded during the year 1970, including "Love Is All Around" & the Beatles reprise "A Day In A Life", both extracted from the Eric Buron Declares War's recordings sessions at the Wally Helder studio, San Fransisco. Other titles include first studio recording by WAR, the original version of "Tobacco Road" from 1969, the "Magic Mountain" b-side of the WAR massive hit, "Spill The Wine", the blues "Home Dream" and "Paint It Black", in a live performance at the Whiskey, Los Angeles in 1969. All tracks produced by Jerry Goldstein.

I Marc 4 ‎- Nelson Psychout

The Vampi Soul's compilation of "original library music from the vaults of Nelson Records", an italian music library label actives during the seventies and primarily issuing records from I Marc 4, one of the most famous italian studio session group. I Marc 4 is a jazz quartet formed by Maurizio Majorana (eb), Antonello Vannucci (p, org), Roberto Podio (ds) and Carlo Pes (eg) whose the name comes from the initials of the four members. Maurizio Majorana & Roberto Podio, both from the Modern Jazz Gang, have played with Lionel Hampton, and Carlo Pes with Barney Kessel. I Marc 4 also played for famous Italian international composers such as Ennio Morricone or Piero Umiliani and recorded most of the Armando Travaioli's compositions. All tracks recorded between 1970-1976, extracted from Nelson GLP catalogue including serie 1000 (1001 to 1007 & 1010), compiled by Alessandro Casella.

Jorge Ben - Jorge Ben

Since his psychedelic samba pop album "O Bidú: Silêncio No Brooklin", recorded in 1967, which contributed to the Tropicália movement emergence, Jorge Ben released during more than a decade various essential pieces of the Brazilian pop music, including the masterworks from his esoteric trilogy, "A Tabúa De Esmeralda" in 1974 & "Africa-Brasil" at the top of his career in 1976. This self-titled album is likewise a part of these, the first recording of a three album series and one "on stage" including "Forca Bruta" & "Negro É Lindo", introducing the Trio Mocotó as his new backing band until 1972. With only one album, Jorge succeeded to influence the main Tropicália artits, writting & composing among his biggest classics  including "País Tropical", "Que Pena", "Take It Easy My brother Charles" or "Charles Anjo 45", which became instantly standards, covered among others Gal Costa ("Que Pena" with Gil), Astrud Gilberto & Som Três ("Take It Easy...") or  Caetano Veloso ("Charles Anjo 45").

Mieko Hirota - My Funny Valentine

"My Funny Valentine" is a cover album of western jazz & soul music by the most famous japanese songtress outside Japan, Mieko Hirota. "The Queen of Pop" in Japan, also nicknamed "MICO", started her professional career at 14, making her debut with cover song "Don't Treat Me Like A Child" released in 1961, but it's with the hit single "Vacation" that she really gained recognition in Japan from 1962. In July 1965, she was the first Japanese singer to perform at the american Newport Jazz Festival, and at the end of the sixties, she was also among the first japanese songstress to turn to the Soul and R&B music. During the seventies, she recorded several jazz funk albums with the Colgen Band led by arranger & pianist Hiromasa Suzuki, including some of the Akira Ishikawa's Count Buffalos group featuring Takeru Muraoka, Akira Okazawa or Takao Naoi. In the late seventies, she settled in New York city and recorded "Mieko Hirota in New York" featuring the Billy Taylor Trio and "Step Across" featuring Terumasa Hino, Joe Farrell, Stanley Cowell, Billy Cobham & Richard Davis. Tiles include the Soul classics of Marvin Gaye "What's Going On" & Aretha Franklin "Day Dreaming", the killer funk "Easy Evil", the Jazz standards "My Funny Valentine" & "There Will Never Be Another You" played in a samba fusion variation.

Cravo & Canela, successor of the Sergio Mendes '66, plays Samba fusion with MPB elements & Jazz Funk arrangements, with the soulful sound of electric piano in the same line as Deodato or Antonio Adolfo. The band is lead by Aramis Barros and formed around guitarist Lucio Nascimento, pianist Reinaldo Arias & his wife Fabiola. Produced, recorded and arranged by Oswaldo Cadaxo, "Preço de Cada Um" includes a skilled line-up with experienced studio musicians featuring Teo Lima (sideman for Antonio Adolfo, Sergio Mendes, Gilberto Gil or Oscar Castro-Neves) and guest star musician, the world famous brazilian accordion player, Sivuca, who worked for Airto Moreira, Miriam Makeba and Paul Simon among others.

J.M. Tim & Foty - African Funk Experimentals 1977 - 1979

Tim & Foty duo (Jean Marie Tiam and Maurice Foty) left their mark on the west african pop music, surrounded by brilliant musicians such as Jean-Yves Messan, Daniel Haustant & François Corea Amadou from Malinga Five, JC Naimaro from french west indies zoukband Kassav' or arranger Alan Shelly. Mary Afi Usuah - African Woman

Mary Afi Usuah was an a opera former singer to the raw power, reminding Betty Davis or Tina Turner's voices and Sly & The Family Stone for the music, one of the greatest songstress than the African continent has produced. From 1969 to 1978, she only released three albums (the first was reissued by the Frank Gossner's label, Voodoo Funk), and toured in Europe as chorister for Duke Ellington, Deep Purple or Led Zeppelin, before returning to Lagos to take a position at the Ministry of Culture. "African Woman" is the meeting between soul music, afrobeat and nigerian highlife including pure funk (What’s A Woman To Do), reggae (Our Generation) and disco sounds (Tell Me Now). For "African Woman", She composed all lyrics, in english and african languages, supported by the Heads Funk Band, aka Akwassa, featuring bassist Joe "Castro" Matthews and guitarist Felix Odey, also in charge of the songs arrangements.  All lyrics by Mary Afi Usuah, arranged by Sylvester Akaiso, Joe Matthews and Felix Odey.

Eko - Funky Disco Music

Eko Roosevelt, nicknamed as the camroonian Quincy Jones, is an arranger, producer & keyboardist, member of the Dikalo group founded in 1976.  The sound of Eko, as the one of his fellow countryman Manu Dibango, is a blend of Makossa music tainted with funk, disco, soul & Jazz. During several years, he was an pianist accompagnist for various french variété singers as Johnny Hallyday or Claude François, and was conductor of the Cameroon's national orchestra. "Funky Disco Music" is Eko's third album including punchy horns, afro-rhythms and groovy bass lines featuring Vicky Edimo from Dikalo. The album was recorded in France at the famous studio Barclay, it opens on the afro-caribbean funky swing song "Funky Disco Music" and closes on the smooth jazz ballad "Emen' Ango", passing by the african folk pop song "Me To A De Try My Own" and the two afro-disco-club gems, the favorites of DJs : "Ndolo Embe Mulema" & "Bowa'a Mba Ngebe".

Sound President Odion Iruoje - Down To Earth

An insane self-produced album by a renowned nigerian producer, Odion Iruoje, originally released on his own label Odion Ltd and featuring, among other, Akin Yuba (music direction) and Tunde Williams (horns) from the Africa '70. The man behinds some sound materials of Fela Kuti albums, recorded during the 1970-1973 period, produced a musical U.F.O., mixing Boogie (Love Care), Zulu rap (Identify With Your Root), Afro-funk (Ikebe) & Juju music, adding digital sound effects and drum machines, all creating an hypnotic music which drives us, not so far of a transe state.  Odion was an influential actor of the Nigerian Afro Funk scene active during the seventies and the eighties, working for EMI, he signed Fela and brings back into his fold, many nigerian funk band including Ofege. Titles includes also the catchy song "Anogo / Giri" & the electronic disco tune "Aro Affair (Crazy Scene)". Gal Costa - Índia

The post-Tropicalia album by one of the female figure from Brazilian music, Gal Costa, including the tango-dance-groove "Relance", selected by Gilles Peterson for the famous Brazilica compilation series released in 1994 on Talkin' Loud label. It features outstanding musicians among Gilberto Gil, Roberto Menescal on guitar, Tenorio Jr., Wagner Tiso on organ, arrangers Rogério Duprat & Arthur Verocai. With "Índia", Gal Costa left the psychedelic rock to embrace the Jazz & the World Music. Backing to her roots from the Bossa Nova, she replaces accoustic guitar at the forefront of her artwork, supported by the accordion play of Dominguinhos and a musical direction by his soul brother, Gilberto Gil. The songs benefited of the sophisticated arrangements, the result of genious work from Arthur VerocaiRogério Duprat, including a great variety of styles : tango for the title-track, afrobrasileiro music for the portuguese protest song  "Milho Verde", Bossa Nova with the Jobim's cover "Desafinado" or the Jazz Funk "Pontos De Luz".

Candido - Drum Fever

Last volume of the Candido "Funk Trilogy" serie which started with "Thousand Finger Man" (1970 - Solid State), and passing by "Beautiful" licenced on Blue Note records in 1971. "Drum Fever" is one of the Candido's funkiest records, conducted by the legendary Afro-Cuban-Jazz arranger Chico O' Farrill, it includes latin waves and soul-jazz grooves with swinging congas, killer keyboards, wah wah guitar and funky brass section. "Drum Fever" was conceived with the Chico O' Farrill complicity, most of the tracks are composed by the Candido-Farrill duo, including also two jazz standards, the big classic "St. Louis Blues" and the caribbean jazz "St. Thomas" of Sonny Rollins played in a up-tempo funk variation.

Dieuf-Dieul De Thiès is a senegalese band of 13 members formed in 1979 featuring the three singers Assane Camara, Gora Mbaye, Bassirou Sarr and the guitarist/leader Pape Seck. From 1979 to 1983, the group known a great success in Senegal and Gambia before to separate. Recently rediscovered by Greek Dj Adamantios Kafetzis, the group started to tour in Europe after the two reissues Aw Sa Yone Vol. 1 & 2, recorded in 1982 and released on the Teranga Beat label.  The Music of Dieuf-Dieul is a kind of Afro-Jazz crossover producing an hypnotic groove, the result of a clever blend between musical traditions (including Mandigo's sound) and modern music (psychedelic afro-rock with "Niankyand "Raki"), Afro Jazz & Cuban Music (Rumba Para Parejas).

Antonio Carlos & Jocafi - Mudei De Idéia

Fantastic debut album of the brazilian duet formed in 1969 by Antônio Carlos Marques Pinto (Antonio Carlos) and José Carlos Figueiredo (Jocafi) including heavy grooves, fuzz guitar and samba beats, featuring arranger Rogerio Duprat and jazz guitarist Lanny Gordin wo played for Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil among others. Antonio Carlos & Jocafi is one of the most famous Brazilian writing duo who worked for Wilson Simonal, Trio Mocotó, Milton Banana or Toquinho. From 1971 to 1996, they have recorded 13 albums, composed many soundtracks for brazilian telenovelas during the seventies, and other popular songs as "Vocé Abusou" or "Kabaluerê" (sampled by brazilian rapper Marcelo D2 on "Qual é?" in 2002). "Vocé Abusou" was a big success when it was sung by Maria Creuza and in France, with its cover "Fais Comme l'Oiseau" by Michel Fugain & Le Big Bazar released in 1972. Titles include also psychedelic rock songs in accordance with the Tropicalià movement (Se Quiser Valer, Quem Vem Lá...), samba (Conceição Da Praia, Morte Do Amor...) and beautiful pop ballads (Hipnose, Bonita).

Norio Maeda & All Stars - Rock Communication "Yagi Bushi"

"Rock Communication" is a concept fusion album by the piano master of japanese avant-garde (check his album "Revolution") featuring Kiyoshi Sugimoto, Kaoru Iiyoshi & Takeshi Inomata. As similar projects of drummer Akira Ishikawa, "Drum Yagibushi Drum" or saxophonist Kosuke Ichihara's "Now Sound '75" albums Norio Maeda revisits some popular standards of the japanese folk repertoire in the psychedelic rock style. During the late sixties and the early seventies, Norio Maeda collaborated as well as arranger and pianist to various jazz rock albums for eminent japanese jazz musicians among others the saxophonist Jiro Inagaki (This Is Jazz Rock), Akira Ishikawa (Bakishinba - Memories Of Africa) and Takeshi Inomata (Drum Method).
